If you feel called to become a nurse, now is the time. A nationwide nursing shortage has created a demand for nurses everywhere — including Texas. As the need for nurses continues to grow, more opportunities become available. Whether you are already established in your career or enrolled in college and want to become a nurse, your goals are within reach.

Concordia University Texas’s Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) track can make it happen. The ABSN track allows you to earn your Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in as few as 16 months, so you can earn your nursing license and start practicing as a registered nurse fast.

However, going back to school is an investment and may seem out of reach for many people without the help of ABSN scholarships. Fortunately, Concordia Texas now offers a scholarship to newly enrolled ABSN students starting in the Fall 2024 semester.

The Need for Nurses in Texas

The nationwide nursing shortage is the result of many factors — two of which are retirements outpacing new hires and an aging population creating greater demand for healthcare. The COVID-19 pandemic only exacerbated this shortage as the need for nurses in Texas and nationwide surged.

Today, the shortage remains as the demand for nurses grows. Texas projects a 17% increase in nursing employment between 2020 and 2030, significantly higher than the projected 6% for the entire country. In fact, Texas is second in the country for employed nurses, yet the nursing shortage in Texas continues.

Because the demand for nurses is so high, choosing to launch your nursing career in Texas opens many doors and opportunities for growth.

The Concordia Texas ABSN Track

Accelerated nursing programs help address the nursing shortage by creating a fast track to a nursing degree. This type of education shares the same breadth and quality as a traditional four-year BSN program, ensuring that ABSN students graduate prepared to provide quality, patient-focused care.

Concordia Texas’s ABSN curriculum combines online nursing coursework with simulation labs and clinical rotations so students receive a well-rounded education that prepares them to confidently take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) and earn their nursing license.

Each component builds off the other: online coursework establishes essential nursing concepts and theory. Students then apply this information during simulation labs, where they practice nursing skills and reenact simulated scenarios while developing clinical judgment and building confidence.

Nursing simulation labs are your first chance to get a taste of what it’s like to work as a nurse. Read more to learn the key role simulation labs play in your education.

Finally, students apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world clinical setting, providing direct patient care under close supervision. Students will work in various healthcare settings during clinical rotations, which also offer valuable networking opportunities with the facility’s healthcare staff.

Upon graduation, students are prepared to provide patient-focused care across populations and settings.

Scholarships for ABSN Students

Nursing school requires careful financial planning. There are other fees you must consider in addition to tuition. This is why Texas nursing scholarships and scholarships for accelerated nursing programs are so important. Scholarships enable many people to return to school to become nurses.

Concordia Texas is committed to developing a skilled nursing workforce that is ready to become healthcare leaders. As such, Concordia Texas now offers a $10,000 scholarship to newly enrolled students starting in the Fall 2024 term. The total $10,000 accelerated nursing scholarship will be disbursed in smaller installments each semester throughout the 16-month ABSN track.
